Online Mandarin Missionaries

PROVO, Utah — A local Taiwanese couple is sharing truths about the LDS church globally with nothing more than a computer and their love for the gospel. Peter and Mickey Tseng have touched the lives of hundreds of Mandarin speaking people worldwide with the online web-logs (blogs) they run.

Peter and Mickey began their journey in the church back in their home country of Taiwan. In 1992 Mickey was baptized during high school after one of her friends introduced her to the church. Peter joined the church in 1997 after meeting with missionaries for several months. With a strictly Buddhist background there was not a lot of support from family members but Peter and Mickey have both found great joy in pursuing their new lives. They met in a ward in Taipei and were married on March 12, 1999.

The Tsengs have made Provo their temporary home while Peter attends BYU as an Information Systems major. While attending class Peter heard the speech give by Elder M. Russell Ballard to the 2007 graduating class of BYU-Hawaii in which he encouraged the graduates to begin taking part in sharing the gospel online. Tseng took this to heart and began a Mandarin blog entitled “Truth of the Mormons.” The blog is dedicated to providing accurate information about the LDS church. The blog has been active for about three months and has attracted over 1500 viewers.

“Lots of people create blogs to make money, but this blog is just to share my testimony to let people know about the church,” Tseng said.

Tseng said that the reason he has done the blog in Mandarin is because there are many people in Mainland China who do not know anything about the LDS church.

There are many of anti-Mormon websites in existence, for instance, Chinese blogs. I have not seen any Chinese blogs to post to relevant positive voice for LDS church. So, my wife and I decided to create a blog to talk about the truth of the Mormon Church,” Tseng said.

Currently there are no LDS missionaries that proselyte in China. Tseng never got to serve a full time mission but feels that he is fulfilling an online mission through the work that he is doing now.

“You can do a mission without going on a mission,” Tseng said.

The most recent installment on his blog was a translated video upload of Glen Beck’s testimony and conversion story which he hopes will touch the lives of many Mandarin speaking people the way it has touched his life.

Mickey is no novice to sharing the gospel having served a full time mission in the Taiwan, Taichung mission from 1994 to 1996. She continues to share the gospel online just like her husband Peter. She and several of her former mission companions began a web site after they returned home from their missions. The purpose of the site was to provide accurate information about the LDS church along with their own personal commentary about how the gospel has impacted their lives. As the web site grew in popularity, it also caught the attention of a local Taiwanese publishing company who wanted to take the information posted online and turn it into a book. In 2000 “Happiness Forever” was published. Mickey said that since the book was published she has received many letters from individuals thanking her for the help they have received from the counsel found within the book.

The next big project for the Tseng family will be a translated video testimony of a single woman residing in Mainland China about her conversion to the LDS church. The Tseng’s are grateful for the lives they have touched and hope to inspire others to begin sharing the spiritual side of their lives online.

“It’s time we say something online, because the church has bad things being said about it all the time. We just want to let people know what is true,” Tseng said.
